Summer is on the way, and while it’s tempting to get outside and soak up some rays, it’s important to practice sun safety as well. Hot, sunny days aren’t the only days you should be conscious of the effects of the sun; sun safety is important in every season, regardless of whether it’s sunny or cloudy out! Exposure to UV rays adds up over time, so make sure you know how the sun can affect your skin, and what you can do to protect yourself.
Effects of the Sun on Your Skin
While a fairly common side effect of sun exposure, sunburns aren’t as innocent as they can appear. The red, swollen, and peeling skin is a symptom of widespread damage to your skin cells. In some causes, sunburns severe enough to cause blistering can leave permanent damage. However, sunburns aren’t the only thing you have to worry about when you’re out in the sun! Prolonged exposure to UV rays can also lead to premature aging, age spots, and even skin cancer. Both UVA and UVB rays contribute to the development of skin cancer, which makes sun safety and protection imperative.
How to Protect Your Skin from the Sun
Luckily, there are a number of effective ways to reduce the damage the sun can inflict on your skin.
- Limit sun exposure. The sun is the most intense between the hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, so try to stay in the shade or indoors during this period.
- Wear protective layers. Long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats can protect your skin from direct contact with the sun. Wear sunglasses with 100% UV absorption to protect your eyes.
- Use sunscreen. If you’re planning on going outside, make sure you’re always wearing sunscreen. Sunscreen should be part of your skin protection regimen to help prevent skin cancer. Look for sunscreen with a high SPF (sun protection factor), and don’t be stingy on the application! Sunscreen can’t protect you completely, so it should always be used in combination with other sun protection methods.
