October is a month of empowerment for women as the nation raises awareness for both Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence causes this month. Breast cancer and domestic violence are both issues that women face all too often, but with perseverance, women can work to overcome their struggles.
Breast Cancer Awareness
The Breast Cancer Awareness campaign was launched by the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The purpose of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to provide women with the necessary information to help them be vigilant when it comes to their breast health. Breast cancer affects one in eight women, and as part of the Breast Cancer Awareness project, the NBCF provides women with free breast health guides, hosts fundraisers, and shares free educational tools via social networking platforms. It also provides survivors of breast cancer with a chance to share their stories and to inspire others who are currently fighting the disease.
Domestic Violence Awareness
Conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from what was known as the “Day of Unity.” The Day of Unity took place in October 1981, and it was designed to help unify advocates across the nation who were engaged in stopping violence against women and their children. Despite these efforts, domestic violence remains a huge problem in the U.S. today. Many victims of domestic violence are too scared to fight back against their abusers as they fear retribution and having to start their lives all over again. This is especially true if they were made dependent on their abusers and feel like they have no skills to help them gain employment and take care of themselves after they break away.
